Even as many private sector employees await clarification from companies on the new work week structure in the UAE, a Sharjah-based company announced 3-day weekends for employees starting at next year.

Inspired by the UAE government’s announcement of the 4.5-day work week, Rouya Consultancy will adopt a 4-day work week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with Friday, Saturday and Sunday off.

The private company‘s move echoes Sharjah’s broader adoption of the three-day weekend, announced Thursday, to be implemented across government entities.

Speaking to the Khaleej Times, AbdulRahman Salem, director of Rouya Consultancy, said: “As founders of the company, we have decided to use the flexibility that the new UAE labor law offers to private entities. to determine employee days off “.

UAE Minister of Human Resources and Emiratization Dr Abdulrahman Awar on Tuesday urged private companies to take advantage of the UAE’s new workweek to make their own adjustments that serve the interests and business activities.

Salem said longer weekends will improve employee performance and improve well-being. The move was prompted by the positive results countries like Iceland and Japan have reported on four-day workweek trials to improve health and work-life balance.

“As a PR and communications consultant, we find ourselves finishing jobs, doing housework, shopping, studying for our kids on weekends, which barely gives us time to to rest. “

The 3-day weekend, Salem pointed out, will allow employees to do their shopping in one day, while having two days off to spend time with their families, practice their own hobbies, register for training, pursue higher education or start their own side. Business.

“The UAE constantly encourages employees to set up their businesses for the central role of start-ups in driving the national economy. As a start-up, we also encourage our employees to start their own businesses, as this is the future of the UAE and the region at large. “

He noted that giving Friday time off will allow parents to support themselves when their children are in school for half a day.

Private companies across the country have announced a shift to the weekend from Saturday to Sunday in accordance with the UAE’s new work week which will apply to all government entities from January 2022. Consultants and employees expect private companies to go for the shift, although it remains unclear whether the mid-Friday holiday will pass.
