New York City private business vaccination mandate is in effect, fines threaten employers with unvaccinated workers


New York City’s vaccination mandate for private employers went into effect Monday, as the nation’s largest city seeks to implement the toughest vaccine requirement for non-government employees yet.

This means that workers in all businesses in the city, regardless of size, must provide proof to their employer that they have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and proof of a second dose no later than 45 days after that. The requirement also applies to contractors.

If they don’t, the employer must ban them from the workplace or the company could face a “$1,000 fine and escalating penalties thereafter if the violations persist.”

Employers will be required to post a certificate in a public area of ​​their business stating that they only allow vaccinated employees into their workplace.


Under city guidelines, businesses can choose one of three ways to comply with the city order. They can either keep a copy of a worker’s proof of vaccination in their records, create their own proof of vaccination record including the worker’s name and whether that worker is fully vaccinated, or check workers’ vaccination status daily before the start of work.

“If we find a problem, we just ask the company to fix it, fix it, and they overwhelmingly do,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said earlier this month. on the operation of the application. “In very, very few cases we have needed to apply penalties, but very rarely. The goal is not to penalize. The goal is just to make it work.”


De Blasio cited the city’s experience mandating vaccines for its own workers and some public establishments like bars to underscore how confident he is that the mandate for private businesses will work. And I don’t say that without disrespecting them. I think a lot of people when they really decided to lose a paycheck and where they were in their careers compared to just getting vaccinated, the vast majority have been vaccinated.”


“Employers have many options,” the mayor added.

Employees have less. If they’re not fully immunized, the only reason they can come to a workplace is “for a quick and limited purpose,” such as “going to the bathroom, making a delivery, or clocking in and receiving an assignment before leaving.” to begin a solitary assignment.”
